You always come to a time in life when you get a new server or computer and need to get your printers up and running on the new system. In this post I will show you the different ways of doing that depending on what version of Windows you are using.
Windows NT, 2000, XP and Server 2003:
To migrate printers from Windows XP and Server 2003 you can use a program called PrintMig. That you can download from www.compit.se/download/program/printmig3.1.zip
To migrate the printers run printmig.exe and click Actions and the choose Backup. Name the file and save the file.
To restore the printers choose action and restore and browse for the file and click open.
Windows Vista, 7 and Server 2008:
In Windows Vista and server 2008 Microsoft introduced two new ways of migrating printers.
printbrm.exe (command line tool) and directly from Print Management.
- Printbrm.exe can be found in C:\windows\System32\spool\tools to get the command line options run printbrm.exe /?
To save the printers to a file run printbrm.exe –b –f c:\temp\printers.printerexport
To restore the printers run printbrm.exe –r –f c:\temp\printers.printerexport
Print Management start this program by writing printmanagement.msc in Run or typing Print Management in the Search program and files and start the program.
When the program is started right click on Print Management and choose Migrate Printers.
Follow the wizard.
To restore the printers run the same wizard that you used to migrate the printers but choose to Import printer queues and printer drivers from a file.
